"This is my personal
experience,
during partition. It was 1947, my husband was working as chief
accountant
in United commercial Bank in a town called Amritsar in Punjab. Lahore
was
an hour by train from Amritsar. We were staying in the city very near
to
the bank. The Golden Temple of Amritsar was 10 minutes walking
distance.
We had colonies of Hindus and Muslims all living closely. All of sudden
in the end of May riots broke out in the whole of Punjab. Wherever the
Muslims were in majority, they killed Hindus and Sikhs and Hindus and
Sikhs
Punjabis also started to kill wherever they were in majority. It was a
horrible sight for those who had to go out for their work or jobs. We
ladies
and children did not go out at all, but my husband used to go every day
to open the bank. As chief cashier he had the keys of the bank
safe
to open the bank for public for couple of hours every day. They could
not
keep the bank closed. Then he went in the morning, I was always afraid,
that he may not come back home. Since he was not Sikh, the Muslims were
not very sure whether he was a Muslim or Hindu. At night one could see
from the roof, homes on fire. It was summer, we did not have air
conditioning
in the houses. We all had fans, all the houses had flat roof tops, we
had
cots (beds) made of wood & jutes and in the evening we all
sprinkled
water on the roof. It made it cooler at night. We slept under the blue
sky and stars. We could see at night some houses on fire it looked that
the whole town was burning. We had big doors in the front of each
colony.
That was the only way to enter each colony. Our men every night used to
watch that door by rotation so that no one could enter and burn our
houses.
The curfew was ordered at night they could lift curfew for few hours we
could buy only lentils, rice, oil, potatoes and onions. We could not
get
any fresh fruits or fresh vegetables as the vendors also were afraid of
their safety. For milk we would send someone to bring it for us.
Nothing
was easy. When it got worse, they enforced martial Law, it was to shoot
at sight order for the police. The Muslims took so many Hindus young
girls
and raped them, made them parade on the road naked with only a green
flag
on their body. The green flag was Muslims sign at that time. At night
then
we went out on flat roof top we heard a chat in Hindi slogans "Jo Bole
So Nihal, Sat Shree Akal" and Allah Akbar all night. They wanted to
tell
each other that they were awake and are taking care of their colonies.
After partition there, police found so many Hindu girls and rescued
them
and brought them back to their parents. It was a shame that their
parents
would not accept them. Thus became such a mess to keep these girls in
the
refugee camps for how long? There was chaos in the whole of Punjab.
Since I had
two little girls and I could not get even milk everyday for them, we
decided
that I could go to Karachi, where there was no trouble. My parents were
in Hyderabad Sind and my in-laws were in Karachi. I took a train to
Karachi.
In the train, I heard that in the train before ours, the Muslims had
pulled
out all Hindu men, women and children and killed them on the platform
at
Multan. Multan as a border town of Punjab and Sind. You can imagine
what
must be my condition. In the whole journey, I did not speak to anyone
or
aid anything as to who was I. I was holding my both girls tight,
praying
to God and by Grace of God , I reached Karachi.I was in Karachi or a
month
when on 14th August it was decided that India was divided in the
Pakistan
and India. They gave half Punjab, whole Sind to Pakistan and thus 15th
August, India became an independent country. Amritsar in India and
Lahore
in Pakistan became a border on one side. Now Muslims from Hindu side of
Punjab started coming to Sind with the stories how Sikh and
Punjabi
Hindus had killed Muslims. They did not mention what they did to Hindus
and Sikhs. So, as we Sindhis are peace loving people and did not fight
or wanted to kill, so any Sindhies started to leave Sind. My
husband
came to Karachi to take us back to Amritsar. I had three young sisters
and one sister in law. My mother and my mother-in-law told us to take
the
girls with us. They had so much to decide, what to do, where to go. We
left Karachi by ship to Bombay. There were only a few cabins and
hundreds
of people wanted to go. We all had to come as deck passengers. Pakistan
police and customs did not let us take with us anything except clothes.
We managed to bring our jewellery and cash on our waist and I brought
four
young girls with me as my mother was scared that Muslims refugees might
repeat abducting girls like Punjab. It was August monsoon season. The
sea
was rough and so many people were sea sick. It was a terrible journey
to
Bombay. Although our Sindhi Muslims were very friendly with us and for
years we stayed as neighbours and went to same schools, same colleges
but
who knows what could have happened. When our ship arrived at Bombay,
some
rich Sindhi businesses who were well settled in Bombay arranged for
everyone
who came by Ship to stay few days until they can think where to go.
Some
one took us to Kalbadevi and they called it a refugee
Camp. There were few huge rooms like a big hall and we kept our luggage
around and slept on floor in between . So many families were in that
hall.
They gave all of us hot meals, tea coffee and milk. It was really very
nice of them. Maximum one can stay for a week. We managed to get
tickets
for Delhi and we left in a couple of days for Delhi. When we reached
Delhi,
it was impossible to get a train
for Amritsar. No body cared for reservation for first class coach. It
was
chaos at the railway station. People were travelling even on the roofs
of the train. Muslims were leaving Hindu side of Pakistan and coming to
Lahore via Amritsar. We knew someone in Army and we managed to get a
ride
in Military Convoy. The Convoy was going with empty trucks to rescue
Hindus
from Pakistan to India. They were going to Lahore. My husband had to
resume
his duty so we went in a Military convoy. They gave us one empty truck
and we all sat there and carried tins of food, bread, water and milk
for
kids. At night the convoy would stop in a military camps and then start
in the morning. We reached Amritsar in three days. We were very safe
with
the military people but I will never forget this experience in my life.
On 8th of January 1948, Muslims refugees (Mohargees) started to loot
and
killed some people in their own houses in Sind. They wanted Sindhi
Hindus
to go away from Sindh. It frightened so many Hindus. My parents and
in-laws
also decided to leave Hyderabad and Karachi Sind. they left their
furnished houses and other things behind. They tried to sell the houses
but no body wanted to buy. Muslims immigrants knew that they will get
everything
for free. My brothers and brothers-in-law left their jobs. When Muslims
refugees looted some people, it was then necessary for Hindu
Sindhis
to leave Sind their native land or fight back. We Sindhi are not
fighters
so slowly every one started to leave Sind, the land of their birth.
They all left
everything and brought clothes, cash and jewellery, that is the real
story
of many Sindhis. They all came and found jobs all over India.
They
could not claim anything what they left in Sindh. After sometime few
people
got in Bombay some flats to live.
But by grace of God every Sindhi
with their hard work got settled again not only all over India but all
over the world. Today we Sindhis are all doing very well with God's
Grace
only we don't have our native land, we all miss that. "
