Fifty years ago we left our
beloved
Sind, but even today we can never forget from our hearts.
If I think even for two minutes, everything appears in front of my
eyes.
We Hindus and
Muslims
were living together in harmony. Our milkman and laundryman were
Muslims.
We had a very good relationship
with
each other. Suddenly after Partition of India refugees from
other towns began fighting, and they broke into some people's houses,
took
possession of
these houses.
Poor Sindhis got frightened. They closed down their shops and
businesses.
Some of them were stabbed with
knives.
There was a lot of bloodshed and deaths. Everyone was
wondering how all these atrocities happened. Poor Sindhis began to flee
their homeland. Some
went to Ajmer, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Jaipur. Alas Sind was getting empty
(of
their own people).
Our
brothers forced all the women to flee to safety first. So our brother's
employer who was
living
in Surat offered us temporary accommodation. But I cannot forget Sind
where
we had all the temples and
Gurudwaras,
and the towns were so beautiful to look at. Near our city
of Hyderabad were towns like Sukhar, Larkano, Rohri? etc. There were
excellent
schools
in Sind. Tolaram Girls' School,
Kundammal Girls' School, Samoratbai School, Dada Vasvani
Sindhi School. There were plenty
of
boys' schools as well. In Hyderabad there was a new housing
development in Kilo (fort) which had beautiful houses and wedding halls
and all other facilities.
The River Indus was flowing through Hyderabad where we used to go on New
Moon day and feed the fishes and
do
our traditional dances. Near the river there was a lady called
"Dhahi" who used to sell dhoda and chutney which were very delicious.
Sindhis
were extremely
happy
in this land.
There was a big temple of the great saint, Teoram, where a lot of holy
people were living.
Every
day they were conducting prayers and religious discourse. Saint
Pehlaj's
Temple was also on
the
same road. What wonderful hymns and devotional music were dedicated to
him. Every full moon we used to
go
to "Gidu Bunder" (where the river was at its widest). There
was a lot of enjoyment. The nearest city from Hyderabad was Karachi. In
the summer months
we
used to go on holiday to Karachi where it was cooler. Karachi was also
a very beautiful
city.
Oh, what a tragedy! So many years have passed, but I can never forget my
beloved Sind. What more can I
write
about Udero Lal where we used to go on New Moon day
and distribute sweet meats.
